Your Thoughts Edit
Whether you were a fellow handler in SOTF Mini or just an avid reader of the site, we'd like to know what you thought about Ryuhei. What did you like, or dislike, about the character? Let us know here!
- Ryuhei was a special character. I've talked a little about what makes him great here, but there's a lot more to say. Like most of Kiriyama's gang, there wasn't a whole lot of depth and nuance to the canon version of Ryuhei; he mostly existed to make Kiriyama look cool by comparison. He was one of the goofier members of the gang, and Fior really took that and ran with it, to great effect. Ryuhei was Jimmy Brennan before Jimmy Brennan, with the added bonus of having a really close set of ties to other characters from the get go and of residing comfortably in a genre/setting in which his style of half-humorous, half-menacing play fit in really well.
Ryuhei was basically a loser from the start, stumbling into his early triumphs mostly through luck and often extricating himself from sticky situations in the same fashion. He had an edge to him, where he realized he wasn't as cool as he wanted to be but also had a chance to finally become a real contender. It was this that made him sympathetic; Ryuhei could be violent and cruel, but there was always a reason behind it, which is one of the most important parts in keeping a killer interesting and fresh. While probably a villain by any reasonable standard, Ryuhei also felt, in his own weird way, like the protagonist of the BR AU, a character that came pretty close to universally beloved, and for good reason. I don't think too many people would've been upset had he continued through to victory. - MurderWeasel
